(optional)- could the biosphere exist without the magnetosphere? What important function does the magnetosphere play in relation to earth.

also, three negative effects that would occur should the magnetosphere decay and no longer exist?

  1. We have the magnetosphere due to the Earth's iron liquid core. This creates what is called a dynamo and produces the magnetic field.

Without it there would be no biosphere since the magnetosphere protects us from the solar wind. This is why there will be no life found on the surface of Mars...well, one of the reasons anyhow.

  2. Internal Earth = Iron core

    Iron Core= Earths Magnetic field

Magnetic field = Protection from Cosmic radiation

Protection from cosmic radiation = Water can produce all forms of life with not harm from radiation which would kill all forms off

  3. Magnetic fields are produced when a charge moves through space. The Earth's core acts as a dynamo producing a magnetic field through its core. Conductive sections of the Earth's core hold a charge and get pushed around by the convection of liquid rock and metal. This is the Earth's magnetosphere.

If there had been no magnetosphere the early development of life might have been disrupted depending on where it first developed, but once it took hold in deeper parts of the ocean the solar radiation making its way to Earth's surface wouldn't have posed so much of a threat. Life on land as we know it wouldn't have developed however since life would have to put up with very high amounts of radiation, especially during periodic solar flairs and solar super storms. Cell growth in every organism would need to go at a snails pace to make sure cancerous mutations did not develop.

There is a chance all that radiation would have destroyed our hydrosphere which would have brought down the biosphere along with it. Without a magnetosphere the water vapor in our atmosphere would have been constantly been bombarded with radiation. This would cause many water molecules to seperate under the collisions with the deadly particles into oxygen and hydrogen. Earth's gravity is not strong enough to hold hydrogen like gas giants so it would make its way to the stratosphere and then eventually float away. After awhile all that would remain of the ocean would be the left over oxygen. Such a process might have helped Mars along to its current dry state.

  4.   the molten metals that exist in the outter core are constantly circulating. that circulation is whant causes the earths magnetic feild. the earths magnetic feild is what protects all life on earth from cosmic radiation and the solar wind. so without the earths magnetic feild, life could not exist.

put simply, if the magnetic feild around earth decayed into nothing, imagine throwing a peach into a bonfire and the peach is earth.

  5. The internal molten iron core of the Earth generates our planet's magnetic field or magnetosphere.

The biosphere would indeed be jeopardized by the cessation of the magnetosphere and might not have come into existence without it.  Essentially, the magnetosphere provides a 'force field' if you will, protecting the living systems on Earth from high energy particles and solar winds.  The aurora borealis is an illustration of the effect between such charged particles and the Earths magnetosphere at a pole.

Protection from cosmic rays, etc has allowed the evolution of life as we know it.

    Three negative effects -

Compasses wouldn't work - navigation would be ruined

Migratory animals/birds - would be lost

We might all die from the increased exposure to cosmic rays and other dangerous particles.
