    Rocks are natural repositories for many mineral nutrients that are needed in aquatic and land-based ecosystems.  For instance, the phosphorus cycle relies on the phosphorus in rocks to be weathered away and put into water for autotrophs to take up.  Heterotrophs get their phosphorus from the autotrophs.
