  1. There are two options for the products depending on the relative amounts of powdered iron and sulfur.

    Fe(s) + S(s) -->  FeS(s)

    or

    2Fe(s) +  3S(s)  --> Fe2S3(s)

    With a limited amount of sulfur compared to iron it goes to the lower oxidation state, FeS.

    With an excess of sulfur it goes to the higher oxidation state, Fe2S3.
