  5. in many ways it depends on exactly what you are looking at and how you are looking at it--resources, total size of the economy, per capita wealth, self-sufficiency,  etc.

    Australia and South Africa would be two at the top of the list that are entirely in the southern hemisphere.

    Brazil would also be on the list, but it is also partially in northern hemisphere. Argentina and Chile also are rich in some senses, even though they have had problems.
