  1. call the highway patrol in your area...meow

  2. It's hard to say. Originally, railroads were granted land or purchased it, way back when. But over the years every type of real estate action you can think of occurs at some point - sales, concessions, leases, trades, everything. So the right-of-way varies from place to place. I work for a small railroad and people sometimes call with the same question. Our railroad cuts through many farm fields and generally the right-of-way extends 50 feet either side from the center of the track. But, in the towns, it might be 100 x 200 feet over there, 6 acres down there, or 1,000 feet long by 20 feet wide in another spot. It's always different based on the real estate transactions of the past. If you look up the railroad name in the phone book, find the number for the Road Master. He should be able to tell you.

  3. Call the engineering dept for the railroad tracks in question.  Tell them where you are and they'll be able to tell you exactly how big their right of way is.  It can and does vary from place to place.  Typical is 50 from center of the rail.
