I started a job for a company last monday. the boss told me that pay is on the 1st and the 16th of each months. I worked full week before august 1 but I did not get paid yet. My boss is too busy doing her own stuff and I think she forgot to pay or either she doesn't like to pay her workers on time.. what is the right way to ask if my boss seems to pay their workers? will the boss get mad and think less of me?? if I try to go after the paycheck although the boss didn't pay on time??

  1. ... be coy - go in with an alternative question, but a related one.  For example "Ms. SO and SO, I know you will be handing out checks on the 1st and the 15th of each month, but is there anyway I could have direct deposit so that I won't be gong to the bank during my lunch hour"?

That will spark the conversation, and then you can say, by the way, I'm assuming you hold back a pay perioid since I didn't get my check on the 1st (15th).

    Try it!

  2. You have a RIGHT to be paid in a timely manner, so if the boss owes you money then you need to say something.  Approaching it gently, such as "Are the paychecks in yet?" might remind her.

HOWEVER- you also need to understand pay periods. Not all companies figure them the same.  My hubby works at Southwest Airlines- he gets paid the 5th and 20th of each month. However, for the check on the 5th that covers work from the 16th to the end of the month (get paid the 5th of the next month) and the work from the 1st to the 15th shows up on the 20th.  So, perhaps you missed the pay period for that paycheck and will have to wait for the next.

Just ask, it shouldn't hurt.  You do have a right to know. Maybe just ask for an explanation of pay periods or a calendar when each one ends so you have that for reference.

If your work utilizes hand-written time sheets, make sure that was received. Most companies there is someone dedicated to payroll and that's the person you should talk to about paychecks, but if your boss is also the one who cuts the checks she's the one you need to talk to.

For future reference- if you do utilize paper time sheets, make sure to have a copy prior to turning it in each and every time, just in case it gets lost- you have something to account for all the time you've worked. It's your money!

  3. If you started a job last Monday and you get paid twice a month, that pay period ended the Friday before you even started. Your next check will be on or about the 15th and may or may not be for three weeks of work. Does the company have a HR office or even ask another employee whom  you have become friends with.

  4. Do you have a payroll department?  If so, ask them about it but if it is your boss who does the payroll then just inquire as to when you will get paid.  Just because your boss is busy doesn't mean you shouldn't get paid for doing the job you were hired to do.  Your boss shouldn't get mad since it is a valid question.

  5. usually paychecks come within 2-3 weeks after you start b.c when u get paid its not from that week of pay- its from the weel before- if your curious- ask her- do you know when will my 1st paycheck come in? or play it off smoothly if you dont want to come off too blunt- can you explain to me how we get paid? its simple u shouldnt have to feel like u doing somthing wrong its your pay.

  6. You can politely remind your boss regarding the delayed paycheck !!

  7. Just ask her when you are suppose to get paid, if she says the 1st and the 16th, then ask her how come you haven't gotten yours yet. That's a non-confrontational way to ask.

  8. Wait until the 16th--it sounds like that is when you should be getting your first paycheck.
