Question:

What is the right way to switch lanes?

It's one of those things that we do so intuitively that we don't think about all the steps in doing it. I noticed that some people brake right before they switch.

  1. uh...check to make sure nobody's there, put on your blinker, then switch lanes.

I don't know why someone would brake, other than the obvious reason.

  2. If you are driving in New Jersey, NEVER EVER use a turn signal! You don't want to give any clues as to your next move. You'll never get anywhere that way.

  3. 1. Signal

    2. Look in your mirror

    3. Look over your shoulder

    4. Slowly move to the lane you want. (If clear)

I also like to give the car some gas or down shift 1 gear (or 2) before moving because it's harder to accelerate than to stop. So If I need to get up to speed or stop, I'm ready for it.

  4. Look well ahead to the lane your going to  Mirror signal BLIND SPOT  DO NOT BRAKE  move smoothly  into the lane . check mirror

  5. just use ur turn signal to let other drivers know you wanna switch lanes, then look in your mirrors, if the lane is clear, check your blind spot, then merge over.

don't cut people off, don't brake unless traffic in your lane stops short, don't wait to turn your turn signal on.

  6. 1. Signal your intention. (before anything else so if it is very crowded other people will give way)

    2. Check your rear mirror (not very important), followed by your side mirror on the side you're moving to (very important) and turn your head to check the blind spot (important, in case a vehicle two lanes away or emerging from a side road/ entry ramp is entering the same lane as you, or you missed a small motorcycle earlier)

    3. Slowly enter the lane. Normally you'll want to ride cautiously on the lane divider for a few seconds before fully entering, to provide adequate warning to anyone who isn't fully focused on the road.

  7. First, use your turn signal light (a true pet peeve of mine when other motorists completely ignore this and expect me to be able to read their minds ...). This will give warning to motorists around you that you wish to turn. Keep that turn signal on through out the manoevre.

Next, check all mirrors to ensure the lane is clear.

Shoulder-check to confirm that no one is sitting in your blind spot.

Maintaining speed, merge over to the next lane. Unless you are speeding and risk running into the tail end of the vehicle in front of you, there should be no reason to brake.

    Turn off your turn signal.
