  1. I'll address the plane issue.  Many airlines will not allow a cat in the compartment. That means you will not know how your animal is handled during the trip.  You can put all the LIVE ANIMAL stickers on its crate that you own, but there is no guarantee that your cat will arrive at your destination alive.  Airlines will not guarantee the health of your animal.  Many allow only one or two animals per flight, so you have to check weeks or months in advance to be sure your animal will be on the same flight as you.

The rules will vary from airline to airline.  Some will permit one animal in first class if the crate meets the size restraints.  You will not be allowed to take your cat from the crate during the flight.

Talk to your vet.  Good luck.

  2. The first person to answer is right about how a cat looks - if you run your hands along the sides, you should just be able to feel the indentations of the ribs.  Looking at the cat from the top while the cat is standing, the cat should be the same width as the front shoulders, with the same width going all the way to the back shoulders (not sticking out, not caving in)

As for food, diet cat food is actually worst for cats than regular cat food because diet cat food takes away protein, and inserts carbohydrates, leaving a cat feeling more hungry.

Use high quality high protein cat food with little to no grains, fruits, vegetables.  Also, if you free feed your cat, change it to many small meals a day.  Cats have a stomach the size of a teaspoon (or table spoon?) and do best on lots of small meals, vs one or two large meals.  Check out this site for Cat food:  http://www.catinfo.org/

As for airlines, there is some great answers about how to fly with a cat already listed :)

  3. Depends on the size of the cat. Generally if you run your hands down his/her side and you should be able to semi feel his/her ribs. It should not be defined or poking out however. Look at your pet from above. Some indentation between the rib cage and the hips, depicting an hourglass shape, indicates that your pet is at a desirable weight. Here this is really helpful http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Resource/Img/...

ALWAYS ask a vet before putting him/her on a diet. Second if it does need to loose weight you can give then weight loss kibble and follow the directions. You can take a cat on a plane but she will need to be kennled etc and they won't be next to you because people have allergies
