What is the risk to having an open wifi node? ?

I and my wife use wireless lap tops that never stay connected that long but our connection is not encripted. What can someone do with my open connection?

Someone could use your connection for something illegal.  You'd have to prove that it wasn't you or your wife using the connection at the time.  (Like you were hours away from home.)  If what they did was a danger to national security you could win an all-expenses paid vacation in Cuba for an undetermined amount of time.

  3. If either of you has file sharing enabled, and any shared folders, others could access them.

    You could be supplying internet to a lot of people, and have insufficient bandwidth to do what you want to do.

    You could have someone use your connection and use excessive bandwidth.  Your internet service provider could suspend your account.
