  1. To drive the train and get passengers to their destination safely I suppose.

  2. what they do is, sit there, push the handle forward & backwards !

  3. Train Drivers have to have a full understanding and knowledge of Network Rail's "Rule's" regarding driving trains (this is all about signals and what to do when things go t*t's up, it's like the highway code but about 6 inches thick!)

The they have to have what is know as "Route Knowledge". You can't just drive a train anywhere, you have to know exactly where you are and where you are going, where every signal is, where every speed restriction is, what to do in certain places, rules that apply to certain types of train etc.

Then you have to have "Traction Knowledge". This is basicly knowledge of all of the different types of train that you may drive, what buttons to press, how to sort out problems if they break down etc....

Then of course there's the usual "Customer focus", trying to keep people happy, doing your best etc.

It's a hard job (mentally) but can be very rewarding.

This is only a very basic outline of a Drivers role.

  4. Basically, you've got to get 600 tons of metal uphill and downhill, round curves, over junctions (without de-railing), observe speed limits (which are VERY strict), without overheating the brakes, without overheating the axle-boxes, without jostling the passengers, without damaging the freight, and without straining the couplings - and not arrive late.

  5. first you have to get hired and pass physical.then you go to classes to learn about rules as well as how to get on and off cars and engines.you don't start off as an engineer but as a switchman in a yard.then you will train to be a conductor.you will have to learn thousands of rules and pass tests.you will be on call as soon as you are rested and may not get much sleep sometimes.you will work nights, weekends, and holidays.pay and benefits are good but after deductions, well not great.luck 2u.

  6. In the UK a train driver must belong to a union  ASLEF.  He must work with accordance with a guard and he and the guard have a big responsibility for all the passengers. He must leave and reach his destination in due time.  The train driver must not allow any unauthorised personnel in his driving compartment....not even a inspector.

  7. The same as the driver of any vehicle, get to your destination

    safely.

  8. buy Microsoft Train Simulator and play with that for a while, it will give you an idea of just how complex the train drivers job actually is......and why the job is so sought after! Good luck to you and hope you get the job

  9. To stop the injuns getting onboard

  10. Have some aspiration. Being the Fat Controller pays more.
