  5. The habitants or in other words known as immigrants rented land from the seigneur. They built houses and farmed on this land. They had to pay a small percent annually to the seigneur in either cash or produce. Habitants also had to performed unpaid labor for seigneur a few times each year, such as fixing roads. They use the seigneur’s mill for and paid the miller for using their mill. Habitants purchased seigneuries because of their fur trades, French Habitants lived comfortably perhaps better than a French peasant.
