Besides providing just news, a strong media  should be able to grill the most powerful politician or corporation and make them accountable.

In the west people like David Frost, Bill ORiely(although very right wing) make politicians  sweat and some times just intimidate them in front of the whole world.

There are also people like M Fiiny ( & on yr side) who stand up for consumer rights  and put fear in the hearts of the most corrupt organisations.

to tell the public what's going on in the world. . For example, a newspaper is written by the media, and it tells us current events which, without it(or tv, or radio), we wouldnt ever hear of these events.

In general terms, media helps communication to spread, smoothens its way from one person to other. media helps to gather information on a particular event or subject, simplify the data in a form taht is easy to communicate and understand and at last helps in delievering it to a large mass of people. communication is possible without media, but media helps its way to get easy and communicates better.
