Self-reflexivity is important in cultural studies, because cult. studies theorists recognize that they are themselves the subjects of their own studies.  Social science examines human beings; we (including the social scientists) are human beings; so how do we achieve objectivity? The Cult.Studies theorists would say we don't achieve objectivity - we just make it clear that we are aware of our own selves as an integral part of our own work. If we make a statement, it is not permanent or timeless - it is based on our own self-aware position at that current moment - if we are white, it is going to affect our writings of the non-white.
