Would you mean s*x as in making love or as in gender?  I think the role of s*x as in making love in literature would be to show the passion some of the men and women had for loving each other.  Maybe it serves to symbolize their great love and care for each other and the author thought it to be an essential part in the reading so they added it.  s*x in earlier times had a slightly different meaning than it does today.  That may be something to consider as you answer this question.  Good luck.
