The SENCO is the member of staff responsible for the delivery of educational provision in the school for all children on the special educational needs register, ie children who are statemented or on an individual education program. The senco is the member of staff, usually a teacher who will liaise with the parents and local education authority to make sure the child on the SEN registers needs are being met. They are also responsible for the termly and yearly reviews of these children and whether they need more or less help.

They will take on all the children that have been flagged up as having a difficulty whether it be a learning problem (reading, writing, maths etc) or a physical disability i'e cerebal palsy, muscular dystrophy etc. They will then devise a specific plan for that child to receive help in school whether it be a learning plan or physical plan to get them around school an d make sure they have the correct equipment in place. They then monitor on a daily basis how it's working and will adjust or enhance accordingly.

Special educational needs coordinators (SENCOs) have responsibility for managing the effective delivery of the education psychology service, learning support, behaviour support, SEN assessment and administration, and parent support.
