  1. As a teacher of freshmen I have contact with parents on a pretty regular basis. I feel it is my job to keep parents posted while giving students independence.  However, as they are still freshmen I keep them on a short leash, so to speak. Think of it this way; if it was your child would you want to know if there was an issue.  Remember, teenagers don't tell the parents/guardians all that much.

    - Send home an introduction note about the class and my policies at the beginning of the semester.  I require a parent's signature.

    - I try to write a positive personal note home to each parent/guardian at least once during the semester.

    - I call home if a student's grade is slipping.

    - I call home if I am seeing a behavior issue in class.

I also keep a web page at schoolnotes.com that parents can see.  It tells what was done in class that day, and what the day's homework is.  It also allows parents to contact me.  You'd be surprised how many write and just want to "know".  Again, this is a time when children are pulling away from their parents and some parents have issue with this.  I've found they just like a little reassurance.
