  1. This is a little more opinionated than most of my pieces, but every statement I make is backed up by at least one piece of solid research:

Part of it is generational - Generation X/Y feel more loyal to employers who take an active interest in them.

Part of it is an evil conspiracy by Big Pharma - Gen X/Y have been "diagnosed" to death from a young age - if you talk to 10 people walking down the street, 9 out of 10 will tell you what mental disorder they have; we have been "diseased" by greedy pharmaceutical manufacturers - and therefore we need counseling for our diseases

From a business perspective, counseling can cut down on attrition rates and cut costs for employers that are related to mental disorders/substance abuse; also, counseling can be used as a form of monitoring/control over employees

  2. The workplace has changed. Cognitive, attitudinal and personal competences are required to day to performance effectively the job. Therefore counsling is necessary to develop all the competences required. For instance, to work as a team requires  social skills , people who has not enough social skills need counsling in order to maintain their work position and progress in the company where they are working.

  3. because a lot more people have time off with stress.
