What is the role the United States plays as a member in the World Trade Organization (WTO)?

Mostly harmful.  The United States is very willing to bring cases to arbitration by the WTO, but never complies with adverse rulings.  So basically the USA tries to secure all of the advantages of WTO membership without any of the responsibility.
