It is my understanding that anything over 8 hrs and up to 12 hours in a day is over time and anything over 12 hours in a day is double time. If you work 40 hours in a week then anytime on Saturday would be over time up to 8 hours and over that would be double time. Sunday would all be double time

  1. Federal law requires time and a half pay for hours over 40 in a week.  Some states require time and a half for hours over 8 in a day.  Double time is only given if the employer decides to, it isn't mandated by law.

There is no law on extra pay on weekends, although some employers give it.

  2. The answer to your question may be different depending on the state in which you live and any labor contracts that may effect your situation.

  3. It depends on your state. The rules vary.

  4. Only if your union contract states it.

  5. In California, yes.  All states have different laws though.
