What is the safest and nicest HUD apartment in Kansas City, MO?

We are considering moving to Kansas City, MO in December and plan to live in a HUD apartment complex. I am in college and my boyfriend works full time to support our daughter and I. We come from a small town and I am worried about the crime in Kansas City especially in HUD housing but unfortunately we cannot afford anything else right now. My boyfriend is commuting to Kansas City everyday but with gas prices we cannot afford the commute and have to move. So if anyone could recommend a nice HUD apartment we'd greatly appreciate it.
