What is the safest place to keep a hamster?

I have a pet cat and i am about to get two new female dwarf hamsters. We have had mice before and had a few problems with our cat coming into my room and taking apart our cage to get at the mice (he can open the door). We have had an idea that we could put the cage on a high self and then put a glass frame over it (and drill some holes so they can breath) so the cat cannot get to it. is this a good idea?

  1. chimney

  2. I think thats a good idea... as long as its a high up place where the cat won't be able to jump up and get at them. Just make sure its not too cold and is kinda quiet there and they should be fine.

  3. I have mice and 2 cats and a dog and a niece and nephew so what I do is put  my mice on a really high shelf where they cannot be reached. I keep the door to my room closed because just other animals around will stress the mice (in your case hamster) out because they smell them.

Just make sure you put them in an area that is not high traffic, minimal wind, and somewhere that your cat cannot get to. If you can keep them in a room where you can close the door that would be good too.

As for the glass idea, maybe try something that is more breathable like mesh wire sheet or somthing. Glass will really cut down on airflow and the ammonia in the urine builds up and can give them lung damage.

  4. omg if you have cats you shouldn't get a hamster.

You are just setting yourself up for a tramatic event.

  5. my cousin has 2 mice and a cat we always put them on the cat its so cute

but maybe you should choose one or the other

So do you want a cat or a hamster

  6. dwarf dont go well in cages they can escape easy get a fish tank i have myn in a fish tank and have  the same problem with my cats they cant open a fish tank

  7. A furnace... that should keep it quiet too ;)

  8. put them in a cage the cat can't get into, like a aquarium with a 10# cinder block on top. cheap and effective.

  9. Put it on a glass cage so it can protect you hamster or maybe you can put your hamster in a safe room far from your cat..

  10. safest place is in ya pocket

  11. Honestly, I don't think it's a good idea because the hamsters will not get proper ventilation. If your able to, I'd buy a net cage cover for hamsters and keep the cat out the room at night and when you left the house. Some people like to not have the top of a cage covered, and that's an option too (just make sure your cat isn't in the room) If the cage is on a high shelf, be sure that the cage is on the shelf securely so that there's no chance of it tipping or someone accidentally bumping into it. Hope my advice helps! ^.^

  12. very bad idea please do not get anymore rodents.

  13. I agree, get a lock!!! Was that so hard? On your DOOR???

  14. Ooh ooh! i know! get a lock on your door.

  15. i dont know any place to hide your hamsters but i think that you must look for a place that is a place that your cats cannot go and its amazing that it can open doors

your idea is great make sure that it is very hidden and there are no objects that your cats can climb on

  16. put the cat in the glass with holes and leave her in the garage. Keep the rodents in your room with a bullet proof cage and behind a locked door. Perhaps that will teach those no good mafia cats to mess with dem mieces.

  17. Well, I know they will be plenty safe in a cage. The cat won't get at it :)

  18. No. Buy a mini padlock to put on the cage door so your cat cannot open it. When the cat comes the hamster should move. Try and keep it low down because cats can usually get onto high places and it  might knock the cage down.
