What is the safest way to wash a velvet pillow?

I have a golden, square velvet pillow that I've had for quite a while, and it needs a good washing.

What is the safest way to wash this pillow? I don't want it ruined in any way.

Can you remove the velvet cover? If so then remove it and wash it with a mild soap like Ivory liquid for laundry. Then hang it to dry.

Since you had the pillow for quite a while I would suggest you buy a new pillow form and when the cover is dry re-insert the new form inside.
