What is the salary of a US Ambassador or Consul?

I haven't found that information yet and I wonder how much do they earn. Do they have a step system (like teachers) depending on years of experience?

You can have a junior consul, and a very senior ambassador, with the pay varying considerably.  And yes, there is a step system (actually, it is a Class and Step system) under the Foreign Service system, With Class 1, Step 14 being the highest.  There is also the Senior Executive Service pay schedule, which is higher.  Here is an excellent site from the Department of State:
