It was $110 (US) per month in Malaysia 35 years ago. You get medical and dental care for free. My living allowance would have been higher but the government of Malaysia lent me a house; I didn't have to pay rent.

For comparison, when I returned to the USA I got a job teaching in California at $7,000 per year.
