  3. Gimmy, flight engineers are not really around any longer. They used to be the third man in the cockpit, and at one time were actually mechanics. This was back in the 1960's. Most airlines gave them the chance to become pilots, like the captain and the first officer, and most of them did. A few still held on to their jobs, until they retired. They were given a contract by some of the airlines that I dealt with where they were paid 85% of the first officer's pay, and their union never again had to negociate a contract.
