  1. As much money as you can carry and as much blood as you can suck from the still living arteries of the common people.

  2. The range of typical starting salaries is £31,529 - £41,765. The average starting salary is £36,647. This may rise to £50,000 within a couple of years. After three or more years, salaries can be in the range of £48,000 - £70,000. Those with significant experience can earn around £150,000 (salary data collected July 06).

Pay is often performance-related. For a new trainee, salaries may be increased by 50% annually through bonuses. Managing directors' salaries account for less than 20% of their total earnings (80% is bonus-related). Up to 5% of an investment bank's workforce may be lost annually as a result of poor individual performances. The environment is strongly meritocratic.

Hours are regularly long and often unsocial. Weekend work can be common as deals approach crucial stages. Fifteen-hour days are not unusual and investment bankers will generally work 100-hour weeks. Due to the demands of the job, socialising is often restricted to celebrating deals with colleagues and dining with clients.

    All the best :)
