What is the secret that you always know your right flight number (as a pilot)?

I mean, if you make 4 flights a day, and your flight number changes every time, how do you always know your right number? Often the flight numbers are like "Delta 4256", and when ATC is calling you, you have to know immediately if you are meant. So, do you just burn the number in your brain, or do you write it on a paper and put it next to the cockpit screens?

  1. Interesting question.

When I was flying flights that changed numbers several times a day, I used to carry a roll of masking tape in my flight bag. I'd write the number on the tape and paste it on the glareshield in front of me. A great reminder.

Here's a similar one: Pilots usually wear their earpiece in the "outboard ear", so they can hear the pilot in the other seat. We could be flying in cruise, carrying on a conversation, but as soon as ATC called us by number, I'd be able to tune out the other pilot and respond. Most pilots adapt to the routine pretty easilly.

  2. there's a few places we like to put it so we can easily look at it if we forget. for example on our clock, we write it down basically where the rear view mirror would be, it's on our screen where the radios are, and some pilots put it right there in front of them on the yoke. but really once you start doing this a lot, it just becomes standard and you get use to it.

  3. You write it on a piece of paper and put it where you can see it.  Its not magic.

  4. most pilots like myself have a briefing before any scheduled departure we carelfully plan uor route and the correct amount of fuel required for that journey it may seem confusing for some people but genrally we have our specs on the aircraft we fly and yes we have the flight number ,ie[plane model]

    on hand..
