  1. Actually it is spelled forecastle.It should be pronounced to sound like folk-sel. In past times the forecastle was where the non-rated crewmembers slept. Officers, Warrant officers and Chiefs slept in quarters farther aft.....the Chiefs quarters were referred to as the "goat locker".

It is actually the forward half of the ship.  The forecastle is a small part of the forward half.  Don't get too caught up in nautical nomenclature.  I've spent the better part of 50 years on boats from one sort or the other, from 10 foot dingys to 1000 foot ore carriers, and the wannabees spend more time talking like Popeye than real mariners do.
