What is the self life of most presidential speechwriters?

I have been watching the old WEST WING episodes and I was wondering...we always hear of the toll on the president but what about his staff? How many directors of communication/speech writers last the entire multiple terms of their president?

None do these days.  They usually last a year or 3 but not 4-8 years.
