Question:

What is the sense behind the car tax rules?

As i can 't afford to pay for a year of car tax, i get charged more for paying every six months (approx £20 extra over the year).

And also as i can't afford to replace my old banger of a motor with a newer 'greener' car, i am getting stung with extra road tax.

What options do i have? There are plenty of us in the same boat.

  1. You know what. I paid sales tax on my car 8 years ago in Texas when i bought it, now i moved to Louisiana and they want me to pay $600 tax to the state of louisiana, aint that some shite? I paid my tax obligation on my car now I gotta pay a "road use tax" for the crappiest roads in the US (LA was ranked # 50 of all the states in terms of road quality)

God i want to go back to Texas!

  2. There isn't any.  It's incredible how often they want to charge for the same thing.

...and for roads that are inadequate ... they haven't got a s****.

  3. Think of it as a bulk-buying discount.

  4. In UK there is none in fact it is a total misappropriation of funds an has been since the 1930's

Had this money been used as originally envisaged even since the 1970's we would have a transport  system which is the envy  of the world

  5. Budget better and pay yearly.

I guess you can 'afford' a lot of other things.

You could use public transport as a lot of us do.

  6. Save your money and get a new diesel Fiesta!

  7. Oh mate I know, its rubbish isn't it?

I have the same issue with my mondeo £170 for the year, £105 for 6 months. Its just plain meanness.

The only option is to save up for the tax, or drive an older banger (25 years) and be exempt from tax

  8. Car tax could be recovered on the cost of motor fuel but that's too simple for a government devoted to having as many civil servants in their employment as possible. It would temporarily cause a lot of unemployment, but it would divert a lot of cash towards essential services.

  9. Unfortunately and for some inexplicable reason, the vehicle licensing authority thinks it costs twice as much to issue two road fund licenses a year than it does to issue just one.  I have no idea how they work that one out.  I mean, if my wine merchant decided to charge me an extra fee for buying two bottles of wine instead of the usual one, there would then be a blazing row about it.

I sometimes think we just behave like a flock of sheep going to the slaughter.

I'm sorry that I am unable to help you with your problem.

Motoring used to be fun in UK when I started in 1960.  Now it's just one big mess. We have to pay through the nose for a new car every three years or so, then we get ripped off by the road tax and the fuel tax and all the other taxes we're lumbered with by the very horrid UK.gov.. . .

I just love it in Paris where you can buy petrol right on the pavement in the street.  The French have no idea about health and safety and carry on regardless.

Good for them - we could do with a bit of that here.

Other thing the French do is occasional bursts of civil disobedience.  Result, they always get what they want and the gov has to back down and listen to the mob.  The French are very good at that, I mean, it's their Revolution and like Mao once said when asked, "What do you think of the French Revolution"?  He quickly replied, "It's too early to say".
