What is the shiny red stuff that is on sliced sandwich meat that is in the package? Like deli meat? I won't

let my husband get it now and only eat from the real deli because the prepackaged stuff has that shiny red film on it..anyone know what it is?? or even what I'm talking about??

  1. It's casing. Just like any ground meat, sandwich meat such as bologna, salami, pepperoni, etc is ground meat and spices. They have to stuff it into some kind of casing to cook it, otherwise it will be a crumbled mess instead of a round shape. The red film is just plastic casing. Same thing as the sausage you get at the grocery store, or a chub pack of ground beef. They just don't bother taking it off before they slice it.


  2. I have no idea what you are talking about.  Bologna sometimes has a shiny red casing on it.  You can peel it off if you like.

  3. Are you referring to pastrami?  It has a kind of sheen on it...

  5. I know what your talking about I just dont know what it is...I dont think it will do any harm Im not sick from sandwhich meat..but deli meat is sooo much yummier
