Interstate 5 South to Mexico proceed the Pan American Highway through Mexico and Central America until you get to Costa Rica.  About 2 weeks time.  Be careful !!

It gives the distance as 4400 miles and 70 hours driving time.

I have driven the part of the trip outside of the usa, and the distance sounds about right. (If you dont get too lost).

The driving time given seems a bit fast maybe by about 10 or 20 hours. It is not a good idea to drive at night south of Mexico, not as much due to "bandits" but due to pedestrians, animals and potholes in the road.

In addition the 6 border crossings will probalby average about 3 hours each. Expect the worst for the border crossing into Honduras from El Salvador. Corruption is rampant with some of the border crossing officials, and sometimes the only way to avoid a several hour wait is a bribe, this is no longer the case with Mexico, but it seemed to be expected in some of the other CA countries. (But not Nicaragua).
