  1. They are. At the moment they are not a preeminent gang but remnants remain. They are affiliated with the Jamaica Labour Party and its past leader Edward Seaga.  They also had a large presence in New York City and in Los Angeles.

  2. 'Showa posse' is a now defunct Jamaican-based gang that was at its peak in about 1992. Many of the images of Jamaican gangs being exceptionally violent, came as a result of this gang's rise somewhere about that time. They embarrased and smeared the reputations of the many honest ordinary jamaican citizens and immigrants in the USA.

It began by trafficking marijuana into the USA using very sophisticated methods, and combined that with extreme violence in their quests to control turf and drug routes. They were especially dominant on the east coast of the U.S.A.

They graduated to using their routes and distribution network to traffic Colombian cocaine, through Jamaica and onto the USA.

They were unprecedented in their willingness to be publicly violent, spraying (showering) their opponents with bullets as coldly as you could ever imagine. Ultimately, this violence led them to become a 'high profile' target for the FBI and the DEA.

At its peak, it was a very powerful organization, with many of its top Jamaican members being well connected with Jamaican political leaders. The leaders were reportedly based in the Kingston inner-city community of Tivoli Gardens.

Tivoli is still reported to be the base of many underworld activities here. Ironically it has MUCH lower crime rates than most of Kingston. This is supposedly a remnant of the highly structured environment that existed under the 'Showa Posse'.

The man prosecuted as the leader of the showa posse, is among those who claim that it 'didn't really exist' the way the feds claimed in thier prosecution. They say the structure internationally was merely an 'implied structure'. Nobody sat down and sought to control 'the posse' as a single entity. The person the feds claimed to be 'the leader' was merely a highly placed respected and connected contact in a 'casual' network of heavywieght traffickers. People claim that to call him the 'leader' was to suggest that there was more organization than actually existed, and this label was used just to convince jurors and the media.

  3. It was started in Jamaica but they did most of their dirty work in America.
