If I were to add a rib along the bottom of the hull and up the side, what is the side referred to as? I know the side of the hull above the waterline is the freeboard, but what is the whole side of the vertical component of the hull called?

  1. It's called the hull, sheerline, sheerstrake, bows, transom, chinelog,  depends on the part of the hull, and the geographical area.  Different locales have diffrent terminology.

  2. The entire side of the boat from bottom to top of the side is referred to in my area as the gunnel. For instance if it was 24 inches tall, the gunnel's have a height off 24 inches. - This may be a local term ,however.

  3. The correct term for the side of the boat if : "FREEBOARD", it it the side of the boat from the waterline to the deck.  check out  Wikipedia for an explanation.  The other answers all have some validity when describing parts of the boat or hull.  It's a sailors thing.

  4. The outside walls of your boat are simply the starboard side or the port side. The top of the walls are called the gunwales.
