I saw a group of 5-6 people together. They tossed a coconut into the river along with something else I couldn't see. They did this as a group. What would the significance of this be? I am assuming it is something spiritual?

  2. Throwing a coconut in the river is a ritual based on Upayas.  The Upayas is based on the preference is given on the birth chart  in respect to the assension of Rahu, an ancient Hindu god.  The year and time of year you were born dtermines the ritual you perform to honor Rahu.  If Rahu is in the 11th house on the birth chart, each year on your birthday you throw a coconut and an offering of gurujan (a type of fruit)  in the river.

  3. Sounds like Santaria to me (Worship of the saints) this is an old world religion with African roots. The religion is very spiritual and based on symbolisim. The coconut is revered and used in many ceremonies and offerings to orishas or saints. When the slaves were brought over from africa they were not allowed to practice there polytheistic religion so they merged their gods with  catholic saints.Offerings of fruits(especially coconuts)and flowers into a river is very common.

  4. In Indian coastal lands where coconut trees abound, festivals are there connnected with it. One is a 'fullmoon' day during monsoon season. Coconuts are released into streams or sea so as to reach distant shore for propagation of coconut species. This is natural way coconuts propagate. The coconut water full of nutrients is formed into it, so aseptically that some physicians (doctors) inject it intravenousely into (directly) the veins of patients as an a laternative to Saline & Glucose.

Coconut is the essential offering to the temple deiries in India.

  5. Maybe the person just couldn't open the coconut and was so made that he chucked into the river.
