Question:

What is the significance of color patterns on old chimnies?

My father lives in an old Victorian style house, and the chimnies have patterns of black and white stripes. We were wondering if this pattern has some unique meaning that would have meant something about the owner. Our thought was that it could even be something political. If anyone has insight, I'd appreciate it!

  1. These were done for aesthetic purposes typically as part of the English Tudor design. The chimneys were highly visible with these structures. In the Victorian era a fad took hold that was to lower the obtrusive profile of the chimneys which consistently had smoke billowing out (as the main source of heating). So simply an aesthetic attribute. (the following is spoke like john clease of Monty Python) I don't know what the h**l I am talking about but doesn't it sound like I do!. God! What a d**n good bull shiiter I am!!! Yes indeedee!  And now for something completely different!.........................its!
