I see pictures of it, but what is it and how is it important?

No one really knows, and there have been centuries of debate about it. Some think it's a sacred spot - a place of worship, others suspect it may be a graveyard. Yet others think it was the place where leaders met to discuss policies and make decisions. And still another group believe it is sort of a giant stone computer, that marks the solstices and equinoxes. So there are lots of opinions on what it might be, but no one really knows. All we can say for sure is that it is evidence of pre-historic engineering (and it was quite a feat to get all those stones assembled and upright when they had nothing but manpower to work with) and it is a very popular tourist attraction. Beyond that, you're as qualified as anyone to interpret its meaning and significance.
