Like for instance the drug Propoxyphene. Why is the capsule around the capsule? Why did they just not compress it into a pill? And if you take apart the capsule and take the powder what happens? Could it kill you?

  1. All medications - pills and capsules - are made with different objective of release. The physical form of the medicine determines a gradual or delayed dissolve.

A capsule mechanism helps to delay and release the medicine at certain points in your digestive system; subsequently the medicine then gets absorbed in the blood and cures you.

So, opening a capsule and consuming it will not have the desired effect as per your need and diagnosis

  2. they use the capsule because when it dissolves, which is pretty quickly because it's so thin, the powder gets dispersed quickly.

when they compress it into a pill it takes longer to disperse because it takes longer for it all to dissolve.

therefore the results are faster with the capsule pill.

the powder won't kill you, you're putting it into your system no matter what (in a capsule or not)

but it will taste REALLY bad.
