What is the significance of the letter in the copy-write section on the back of a topps baseball card?

I noticed that on the backs of topps cards there is a letter in the area where the copy-write is. ex: F But on some of the cards there will be an asterisk next to the letter. ex. F* Is there some sort of significance to this?
