What is the significance of the sets of three in John Steinbeck's The Pearl?

Well one set of three is the family of Kino, Juana and Coyotito. There's also 3 trackers and 3 men killed by Kino. Another group of three they talked about was the three pearl buyers and three settings. I can see how the past, present, and future apply to the story, but i'm still a little bit confused.
