it brings a sort of eerie feeling to the boys in the island. shadows amongst tall trees, implying that no actual breings could be seen, only their shadows. this brings an image of darkness into our minds becasue things can be seen perfectly in day light. maybe the tall trees blocked out the sunlight? their journey through the trees was not a pleasent one and the title shows just this.
