What is the significance of your birthstone?

i don't get what they are for or what they mean?

aquamarine- the treasure of mermaids, great for meditation, strongest in the water, even more in the ocean, which is great for me, i think i was a mermaid in a past life...see my questions, u may understand...(').(')

There are a few birthstone charts.  I think someone just decided it would be cool if each month had its own stone and it became adopted by everyone.  Each stone has different properties.
