What is the difference between a pentacle and a pentagram?

(Not the inverted one) I was wondering why band chose pentagram logo, then changed to yin-yang sign.

The only thing I can think of simiar is balance?

  1. The pentagram is a 5-pointed star.  It has been used in different religions through history.

The pentacle is an encircled pentagram that represents interconnectivity between the 4 elements (earth, air, fire and water) and the spirit.  It is widely used in many pagan beliefs.

The yin-yang represents duality.  For more see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yin_yang

The band probably chose to change it from the pentagram to the yin-yang because there is controversy surrounding the pentagram and they didn't want the bad press...or rather, they didn't want the lack of sales

  2. idk that but i love the yin yan sign cuz it got to do with a physical world and magic =D

  3. The pentagram represents the five elemental directions:

    North - Earth

    East - Air

    South - Fire

    West - Water

    Spirit - Spirit

The Yin-Yang represents the balance between male and female.

  4. there is no similarity.

  5. A pentagram is a five pointed star, used in witchcraft and Wicca. The points of the star symbolise earth, air, fire, water and spirit.

A Pentacle is simply a pentagram which is surrounded by a circle, withe the five points of the star touching the inside of the circle.

Just to clear up a common misunderstanding. To Wiccans, an inverted pentagram is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with "devil worship" or "black magic". An inverted pentagram is simply the badge of a second degree initiate to a Gardenerian or Alexandrian coven.

Satanists and demonolators have taken the inverted pentagram to use in their own worship, as the image of a horned demon can fit into it.

After all - the swastika was a sign of peace and spirituality until Hitler took it and turned it into something dark and evil.

The yin/yang sign represent a balance, a wholeness with - the masculine and the feminine. Each needs the other in order to survive in harmony.

So not 100% the same no, in my humble opinion.

    Hope this helps you. :-)

  6. balance is the similarity, the differences is what is being balanced.

    yin/yang-balance opposits... good/bad, female/male, happy/sad

pentagram-balance nature-everything is tied together and works together.

    how i see it anyway.

  7. The pentagram is sometimes associated with witchcraft.

Maybe they had some negative comments and wanted a more neutral emblem.

  8. You are right they are both symbols of balance, the Pentacle is a symbol of mans harmony with nature and the world, the Yin Yang symbol is also about everything having an opposite, and those opposites needing each other to be in balance.
