  1. 'Sabre-toothed tiger' is a common term for the extinct cats of the genus Smildon, which had the largest and most impressive canines of the sabre-toothed cats (there were many sabre-toothed cat species, none of which were actually tigers, or ancestral to tigers). The canines of Smilodon populator, the largest species, which was found in South America, were up to 8 inches long. They were a little smaller in S. fatalis, the smaller North American species, and smaller still in the ancestral S. gracilis.
