  1. Early Mustangs (Mustang I) had an Allison V-1710, which was a supercharged, V-12 putting out 1000 hp.  Single stage, single gear.

    The next group of Mustangs (51B, C, and D). used the Merlin engine (built by Packard in the US, licensed from Roles Royce).  Those put out more like 1700 hp and had a two stage, two gear supercharged engine.

    The last production run of the Mustangs, the 51H had  a more powerful Merlin engine that had an automatic supercharger with boost control.  It could pump out up to 2200 hp+.
