Skytrain is the name of the elevated transportation system that runs on a track on a platform above Vancouver BC. There are a few places it comes down to ground level, but mostly it's above ground. It has unmanned cars, which look like slilm futuristic subway cars, running in attached clusters of two or four. They automatically stop at each station and run about every five minutes. They connect downtown Vancouver with Burnaby and Surrey.

Sky Train is a railway network found in some countries, though not necessarily under the same name.

The phrase is loosely used to describe a railway network that is exclusively operated over specially built bridges and other supporting infrastructure. The platforms are also located at a level higher than the road. Hence, to reach the platform, you need to climb up several stairs- almost two to three storeys- in most cases. In some places, the railway operator provides an escalator or elevator to reach the train platform.

The phrase Sky Train came to be used since to see the train, you need to look up, if you are standing on the road below. And usually, Sky Trains do not have the over head traction cables required to supply the power. Instead, they have power through the railway track- which makes it very dangerous to cross them, even accidentally.

Most Sky Trains are mono-rails, which means that only one railway track is used- which supplies the electricity.

Commonly, Sky Trains can be found in crowded cities where building a regular railway infrastructure is not possible due to existing buildings and other installations. Hence, it is easier to build a seperate bridge network and platforms that form a maze and bypass these buildings and other installations. Sky Trains also do not impede with vehicular traffic flow, as compared to conventional trains.

For passengers in crowded cities, they offer a cheap and fast mode of transport as well as a panoramic view of the area around. Sky Trains are also featured at several major themed parks and tourist places, to allow visitors a wonderful view of the area of allow them to commute quickly from one attraction to another- especially if the area is large.
