  1. It is a mineral talc that is common in the midwest.  It is soft and easy to carve.


  2. Soapstone is soft rock.

    It was used by kids like chalk.

    It is available in hardware stores, welders and metal workers use it to mark for cutting. It is white and shows up easily.

    It is not talc though.

    Carvers also make some fine items with it.

    Alaska has the black soapstone that makes nice walrus carvings.
