  1. it depends in the division. but usually its gallop, run, what ever it takes to get the fastest time.

  3. It is usually the hand gallop, a four beat, somewhat slower version of the speed at which racehorses run. The canter is a slow, COLLECTED, three beat gait- a modified form of the the gallop. The canter is used in horse shows, particularly hunter and jumper shows, and also in dressage. It is NOT a speed gait- the emphasis is on collection and obedience to the rider's aids, not speed. The average speed of a good collected canter is about 12 to 15 miles per hour- whereas a hand gallop will have a speed of about 20 miles an hour. Racing speed, the speed at which horses like Barbaro go, is about 50++, depending on the horse.
