  1. The National speed limits are

70mph on motorways and dual carraigeways

    60mph on all other roads.

BUT, most roads are subject to a lower speed limit than the National speed limit - as low as 15mph in places.

There are also some stretches of road where a MINIMUM speed limit applies - for example the 8mph minimum speed limit through the Clyde Tunnel in Glasgow

  2. Depends on what you drive and what you count as an open road and if there is street lights, and how far apart they are

In a car on a single carriage way max speed 60mph

if towing on a single carriage way max speed 50mph

On a dual carriage way or motorway in a car max speed 70mph

if towing on a dual carriage way or motorway max speed 60mph

These are the national speed limits and apply to all roads and unless signs show otherwise. The 30mph limit applies to all traffic on all roads with street lighting unless signs show otherwise

  3. 40mph

  4. on the motorway (or freeway to our American cousins)its normally 70mph,unless lower speeds shown, dual carriageways also 70mph(when end of speed limit sign shown) and normally 60mph on A roads, and normally 30mph passing through towns and built up area's,bus's and truck's have lower speeds over these roads
