  1. There are many different types of martial arts.

Some have to do with leverage and using an opponent's momentum against him. (such as judo.)

Some have to do with submission at close quarters (such as jujitsu.)

Some have to do with hitting and kicking (karate, savate and tae kwon do.)

Some have to do with precision (such as tai chi.)

Some have to do with weapons.

Some are a mixture of the above (such as MMA and Bartitsu.)

Some are mere sports, some are forms of meditation and some are nasty, street-survival techniques.

  2. There is no such thing as 'sport martial arts.' There is a fighting sport, and then there is a martial arts forum. They are miles and worlds apart, and nothing alike. The seperation between the two is drastsic and obvious if you look for or train in it.

To answer the question, however - it's a point system based on light to moderate contact where a winner is dictated by who scored the most in the allotted time.

  3. think about what i may have to say. it may sound a bit harsh at first, but if u think about it with an open mind, then you will be able to see it from my point of view. first of all, martial arts is NOT a sport. those who think of it as a sport are not martial martial artists, they are simply sportsmen or sports enthusiasts or people in search or something athletic to do, in this case of martial arts, something that indeed requires you to be very athletic! these are the people that water down the original standards of such, be it even sports, because the original people used to practice their art, whatever that may be, with utmost dedication, that makes what a majority of people do seem like child's play. but martial arts is not a sport. it's a way of life!

like what CD_911 has said, martial arts is indeed, "insanely difficult", to practice to perfection. in my opinion, no other "sport" as you call it, or activity, requires as much in terms of the various factors required of you to perfect YOUR martial art.

perhaps you don't understand what i'm talking about. let me explain. these factors that i am referring to are: endurance (comprising both cardiovascular and muscular), strength, power, speed, reflexes, accuracy, sensitivity, conditioning, timing, footwork, skill, pain threshold, and perhaps more that i can't think of at the moment. but then again, these may comprise of only the hard skills, which are so-called, "easier to pick up". then there's the more difficult to pick up, "soft skills", which require many more factors. this is why i feel martial arts may be one of the, if not the most "insanely difficult", "sport", or activity, to master to perfection!

and honestly, you won't really know what martial arts is, REALLY, until you are able to "feel" it for yourself.

    cheers!

  4. insanely difficult.

  5. If you want a sports experience I guess that you can make your practice more 'sporty'.

Martial arts, for me, are not sport at all.

Sports have rules, the streets do not.

  6. it depends ; full contact is like fighting for your life with rules and a lot of pain and light contact is like touch foot ball,  a lot of fun and not so dangerous

  7. still pretty crazy.  as a san shou fighter ive had numerous concussions, broken bones (including my nose), ligament tears, joint seperations some requireing hospital treatment.  Sport martial arts is usally full contact and demands as much time and energy as any other sport liek foot ball if u are competative.  Foot ball players get jacked all the time as do boxers kickboxers etc they get koed broken noses, cuts etc, numerous injuries muscle soreness, overtraining and many other factors contribute to the demands of being a competative fighter.   But in the end liek any other athlete ur training so u can win at what ur doing and ur gon get out what u put in.
